Great addition to the book, Jim, and I hope - when you come up for air - that you can come on #SustainWhat to discuss your remarkable climate journey and the paths ahead.
Hansen discusses history of his family, history of climate and this article about the history how climate change is made bad by not acting of industry and politics. By the way Hansen analysis global warming hit 1.7°C in 2027 will be the evidence.
Great timing bc I was just thinking about our climate change summer smog that has been more present on the Monterey coast. I was grieving again about how so many of us moved to this county for its clean air from the Central Valley of California (asthma land)
Thank you Jim. Those who would like to disfigure science and uncomfortable findings seem to consistently be short of moral courage. Unfortunately, that is human nature, at any level of responsibility.
Thanks for this Dr Hanson - found a new additional resource mirroring this section of Hansen's book readers may find useful today: Thermal Power and Climate Change - A Data-Driven Analysis of Cause and Effect, 1800-2100 by Tadeusz W Patzek Pre-Print Free pdf book download 423 pgs https://eartharxiv.org/repository/view/10865/ DOI https://doi.org/10.31223/X5PX7K
Rational action, irrational outcome. From the standpoint of individual firms, governments, and voters, continued fossil-fuel expansion was locally rational. From the standpoint of the coupled Earth–human system, it was globally destabilizing. This mismatch can be written schematically as:
Structural inevitability. Once embedded in infrastructure, finance, and geopolitics, fossil-fuel dependence became self-reinforcing. Restraint imposed unilateral costs, while delay shifted damages forward in time. Under such conditions, knowingly destructive behavior does not require ignorance, malice, or denial – only competitive pressure and institutional inertia.
Generalization. The climate case is not anomalous. It exemplifies a recurrent pattern in which humans correctly diagnose long-term systemic risk, explicitly document its consequences, and then proceed regardless, because prevailing incentive structures reward continuation and punish restraint. In this sense, climate breakdown is not an accident of misunderstanding or ignorance, but an emergent outcome of a civilization optimized for short-term throughput within a finite, slowresponding planetary system – one that, for more than a century, allowed industrial and policy elites to externalize destruction with impunity. That period has ended.
Humans did not unknowingly engineer their predicament. They did so with eyes open, repeatedly choosing near-term advantage over long-term habitability. The tragedy lies not in ignorance, but in the systematic subordination of foresight to power – a lesson I learned personally after the OECD published my paper (Patzek, 2007).
#Exxonknew - Sue them all to Hell where they belong! China is now taking the world stage platform for alternative renewable less evil energies because of US selfish insane greed and the fossil fuel puppet politicians in DC! F’ them all! Fed up!
A big question is after capping wells progressively how could/would the fossil fuel industry and related infrastructure, power, knowledge and wealth contribute to healing Earth?
As Earth 🔥 why won't the petro folks help put the fire out and if it is all about profit just sit down and "THINK BABY THINK" and earn on good deeds.
“Whoa Whoa Whoa!… Let us tell you about Stratospheric Aerosol Injection. We need to let desperate people know about it! Then we can slow walk climate change!”
(Honestly, S.A.I. will unfortunately happen anyways)
Great fan/student of James Hansen, but audacious enough to challenge his focus on CO2, to the near exclusion of the thermodynamic import of 1.2 trillion tons of melting global ice, 30 million tons PER HOUR from a melting Greenland. Each melting pound is absorbing 144 BTUs of excess heat energy, so this MUST be included in any comprehensive analysis of the earth's thermodynamics and the all-important hydrological cycle that gives us the equilibration of global temperatures. Also, the real focus should be on global Heat Energy released by burning fossil fuels, not just the CO2 released in that process, which has become the sacred cow of climate science. And, BTW, I'm a retired physician/psychiatrist, NOT an academic climatologist, so I only know and communicate in plain language. Have a blessed day!
Absolutely not. The energy absorbed in solid-to-liquid phase change is WITHIN the Earth energy system and has zero relation to overall Earth system energy balance, except for any change in albedo.
I'm not a scientist but I'm hearing scientist around the world raising alarms because of the massive particle pollution in our air now. Apparently some idiot decided to make a volcano that covered the Earth and now it's having apocalyptic, or at least scientists are telling us "apocalyptic" results? Not sure what's going on but I think there's a problem and this problem is going to destroy any trust the public had in fixing this problem that we know is true called climate change. You know when I hear scientists say "apocalyptic" I worry.
Read Hansen's reports. The aerosol particulate is masking the effects of the present levels of GHGs - clean the air and we would be around 8 degrees warmer. The reduction in sea cloud over shipping lanes from the reduction of sulphur in marine fuels has resulted in higher temperature readings.
Thank you Kathleen. I don't know how old you are but I'm old enough to remember why they blocked sulfur dioxide from coming out of marine fuel why they blocked the sulfur dioxide from coming out of all fuel because all fuel whether it's for your car, for a jet, for a boat, all admit sulfur dioxide. We were watching the ozone layer disappear We were watching buildings just getting etched out because of acid rain. It was just horrible. So you think that taking the sulfur out of the the marine fuel change something, it saved our lives, it's the reason you actually are still alive today because we all worked so hard to end that.
The particulate or aerosol particulate which is known also as "particle pollution" that we're using now to cover the Earth seems to be having some catastrophic effects. I read on a Green Peace site that Mercury levels are skyrocketing in the ocean. If they are using sulfur dioxide aerosol that would make sense. Have you heard anything Is this true there's no way to check on anything and it's just very scary. But if this is true do you think to bring the temperature down 5° we could kill the food source that keeps over a billion people alive, not sure that's a good idea. Then I also heard, now I don't know if any of this is true but these are the what I'm reading that the temperature change has been so drastic so quickly it's having a catastrophic effect on animals all over the world, and I'm also hearing that certain insects have just vanished and that would be because the temperature changed so drastically so quickly. So this makes sense to me because that's what you would assume would happen. My question, is anybody watching this? What is going on and if it's bad how do we stop it because it looks like there's billions of dollars behind this.
The latest marine sulphur reduction was just a few years ago, maybe 2022. The other earlier was for acid rain. The proposed (and in action already) SO2 injections will re-enter the lower atmosphere over the polar areas, and apparently nobody cares. Yes, some crop areas will be affected, but city ppl don't care, their food comes from the grocery. Any temp reduction just buys some time (if any). Think about the stupidity of injecting tons of CO2 into the atmosphere above the level where rain can bring it down, due to the partial-solubility of CO2 in rain water. And who is doing that? Airlines, thousand of flights PER DAY at 30,000 feet.
Yes I know, I agree 100% with you that one airline engine admits as much carbon as 500 cars in one flight from LA to New York as 500 cars driving everyday for a year it's crazy I I agree I think that so much carbon is admitted by the airlines and I think it's so well covered up and we just blame cars but I think the airlines are just as bad. As far as a sulfur dioxide goes I'm on the Central Coast of California. The S02 is in my house! I wake up, I can tell you, I wake up at 3:00 a.m. My tongue is numb on the end and my eyes are burning!! I opened up the door and yeah you can see way up there in the moonlight little lines in the sky and I thought oh my gosh they're injecting it at night. I guess so they don't want people to see but I don't know I think the answer is just shutting down the oil industry and stopping the use of all products that use oil, from plastics to fuels, we've got to do something. I agree but I think this is a disaster I think we're doing more damage to the environment even with the SO2 as we would be with the CO2 it's crazy! Thank you so much for getting back to me and it's been a pleasure to talk to you I'm seriously thinking about moving to Mexico lol Have a great rest of your day!
