Clarification: "trash talk" is what competitive athletes do. Nothing wrong with that. Caitlin Clark is a prolific trash talker -- I love it. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson traded trash talk all the time. It's rather common among some of the best athletes. However, when serious scientific issues are raised on one side and the clique responds with ad hominem remarks, it is inappropriate to describe this as trash talk, which implies that the two behaviors are equal. I don't give a whit about being called brash, although I think that blunt is probably more accurate. The issue is how to communicate scientific understanding to the public -- if the public understood the climate situation, polices would be different -- but we scientists are not good communicators.

Already there is extremely severe coral bleaching mortality across the South Pacific, and much of the North Pacific will be affected later. The Caribbean and many Indian Ocean reefs are already essentially dead.. We knew coral reef ecosystem mass extinction was inevitable since the very first mass coral bleaching events in the 1980s, but nobody would listen or do anything when there was time to act.
