You make this Iowan proud. We live in a Country controlled by Fossil Fools.
I've worked in Renewable Energy for 40 years, this year. What a ride. I've followed your work for almost all that time...since my first class with J. Van Allen at U. of I.
The money in our political system seems to be supreme...presently...hopefully our big human brains will be large enough to implement some self-preservation instincts soon.
I salute you for your life long efforts....knowing first hand the costs.
RESPECT and Thank You !
Keep the light burning in this time of darkness....at some point in time...all the data will become important again.
Thank the gods that you're still dealing with reality, writing with honesty and clarity, and eschewing the perky, false-hope endings that too many of your fellow scientists use.
Refusing to be silenced by the increasing censorship and funding attacks takes great courage, and you are to be commended.
Dear, Dr Hansen, I am 71 yr old inquisitive person with a good capacity for critical thinking. Thank you for persevering with your research since y our time at NASA. The leading edge of every field is always advancing. So I emplore you to weigh in to the discussion on EROEI and the newly formulated 'theory of complexity'. I came across it at www.un-denial.com this month. Basically rigorous investigation of how various energy vectors are measured exaggerates the contribution of so-called renewable energy sources. The full accounting shows these are at best 'rebuildable' but not renewable. The case is more dire for the energy descent future that green new deal thinkers will admit. Therefore Sophia et al will have to prepare for a more constrained future than you publically admit. Yours truly, Ian Graham, MBA, MRE, PDC and life.
Sir, I know you have a lot on your plate but please consider my request.
I would LOVE to talk to you about what really happened at the Woods Hole Climate Summit in 1979. That is the "pivotal" moment in the history of climate science. Climate science splits into two factions and the "Moderates", with their climate sensitivity guesstimate of +1.8°C to +3°C start their rise to dominance in the field.
Everything flows from that moment.
Viewed through the lens of Kuhn's "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" that event clearly defines the point the current climate system paradigm emerges. The last 45 years can be seen as you attempting to overthrow that paradigm. As an anthropologist, it seems blindingly clear that Climate Science is about to have a paradigm shift and you are about to be vindicated.
I would also like to discuss this paper from 1998 with you.
Latitudinal temperature gradients and climate change.
JOURNAL OF GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH, VOL. 103, NO. D6, PAGES 5943-5971, MARCH 27, 1998
To me this seems like "smoking gun" evidence of critical error in the current climate models. David Rind and GISS find that Arctic Amplification will be "no more than twice" overall planetary warming. Climate Models ARE STILL using that value for Amplification because GISS said it "was so". Rind also banished paleoclimate findings from climate science in this paper saying that, "it's use was highly speculative".
Well, now we know, GISS was WRONG. By a LOT.
The Arctic has warmed nearly four times faster than the globe since 1979
The High Arctic is a "carbon bomb" like no other place on the planet. The Boreal Forests are larger than all of the other forests in the world combined, and under them is the permafrost holding 750,000 years of organic carbon deposits. In Siberia, the Yedoma permafrost deposit contains one-third of the total organic carbon on Earth (Altshuler, Goordial, & Whyte, 2017) AND that area has warmed +8°C since 1980.
This paper from Rind and GISS seems like another pivotal moment in the history of the field and in world history.
As I said, I know you have a lot of demands on your time. But, if you ever want to chat, I'm there for you.
Dr Hansen, I am very pleased you are now writing on Substack. Your work has been an inspiration for my own writing in science education, as well as my recent book, The Trump Files. Kind regards, Jack Hassard

Gaia would be proud...
Very happy to see James Hansen here - if this means we get more of him, I’m cheering loudly.
HUGE fan. I reference and discuss your papers all the time. I write "The Crisis Report" here on Substack.

Good to see you revving up your Substack, Jim. Happy to get you on a #sustainwhat webcast to spread word and explore your ideas.
